Pour réaliser Favoriten, Ruth Beckermann a passé trois ans dans une classe de primaire d’un établissement difficile dans un quartier populaire ethniquement mixte de Vienne, où une institutrice déterminée à faire réussir ses élèves les suit de leurs sept à leurs dix ans. Chacun d’eux s’individualise devant la caméra de la réalisatrice. Celle-ci restitue leurs aventures quotidiennes, dans lesquelles se reflète, en arrière-plan, la manière dont la société autrichienne gère l’arrivée de ses nouveaux citoyens afin de les ouvrir à une culture différente de celle de leurs origines. Ruth Beckermann, selon la méthode d’observation qu’elle a construite, s’installe dans la classe et y introduit son spectateur, face à des problématiques dont c’est à lui de tirer les conclusions.
For her latest documentary Favoriten, Ruth Beckermann spent three years following a class of pupils, from the ages of seven to ten, and their devoted teacher at a large, “at risk” primary school in an ethnically diverse, traditionally working-class district in Vienna. We get to know the children as individuals as we experience their daily adventures, struggles, defeats and victories in the microcosm of contemporary western European society: a society struggling with issues of identity and migration. But above all, Favoriten is an ode to childhood and education that builds on Beckermann’s trademark style of asking probing, important questions in an observational way, inviting the audience to navigate their own way on complex topics.
Ruth Beckermann est une réalisatrice et autrice viennoise. Elle a notamment réalisé The Paper Bridge, East of War et American Passages. Son film The Waldheim Waltz a reçu plusieurs distinctions, dont le prix du meilleur documentaire à la Berlinale en 2018, ainsi qu’une nomination aux Oscars.
