Dans une forêt à l’est de la Pologne, un archéologue fouille pour faire émerger les traces du centre d’extermination de Sobibor. Témoins fragiles, des milliers d’objets ayant appartenu aux victimes sortent de terre. Cette recherche doit s’achever, car débute le chantier d’un nouveau musée-mémorial. Comment commémorer la Shoah sur ses lieux-même, aujourd’hui et demain, alors qu’advient une époque sans témoins ? Comment la Shoah continue-t-elle à travailler l’histoire et la mémoire de la Pologne, de ses citoyens, au sein de l’Europe, dans un contexte politique conflictuel ? Le film s’intéresse à ces questions en donnant à voir et à entendre archéologues, historiens, architectes, journalistes, curateurs, petites mains, visiteurs, liés à Sobibor
In a forest in eastern Poland, an archaeologist digs to bring to light the traces of the Sobibor extermination center. Thousands of objects that belonged to the victims are emerging from the ground as fragile witnesses. This research must be completed, because the construction of a new museum-memorial is beginning. How can the Shoah be commemorated on its own site, today and tomorrow, when an era without witnesses is emerging? How does the Shoah continue to work on the history and memory of Poland, of its citizens, within Europe, in a conflicting political context? The film looks at these questions by showing and hearing the voices of archaeologists, historians, architects, journalists, curators, and visitors linked to Sobibor.
Après une thèse en histoire, Arnaud Sauli s’est tourné vers le cinéma documentaire. D’abord dans un programme de recherche du CNRS en anthropologie portant sur le genre et le déclassement en Inde puis au Rwanda. Son premier film Sonatubes-Nyanza (2012, 20 min) a été vu en festivals notamment Entrevues de Belfort et Corsicadoc. Arnaud Sauli a ensuite entamé un travail plus personnel autour de la Shoah avec un premier film sur le travail d’écriture de l’écrivain israélien Aharon Appelfeld. L’Enfance d’Aharon (2017, 76′), a été récompensé d’une étoile de la Scam et programmé dans de nombreux festivals internationaux.
